When was the last time you contemplated how loud a noise around you is? Perhaps you visited a concert where the music was incredibly loud and it got your heart beating super-fast, or maybe you walked into your local library and could hear a pin drop. A decibel meter: This is a special instrument that measures energy levels and volumes of different sounds. This can be a very useful tool for other places you want sound to interact in some way.
A decibel meter is a sound level measuring device. It shows you how loud the sound is and how much of it exists. We rate sound in a unit called decibels (dB), as it is essential to demonstrate the loudness of sound. A whisper would e very soft, while a rock concert can be incredibly loud. The decibel meter does, of course, help us find out as to how much loud or quiet the sounds present in our surroundings are.

Always use a distance between your body and the decibel meter during its operation. This will allow it to take better readings of the sound. That could affect the measurements because, if you hold it too close to yourself, your body can actually get in the way of some of the sound.
How loud is it needed to be measured? A few decibel meters read up to 130 dB of sound, whereas some type can crack even higher ratings and go all the way to 200 dB. If you are somewhere very loud, say at a rock concert or in a busy factory, pick one that can measure louder sounds.

And they can store sensor data, so that you can see what you measured at a certain time later in another device (but technology based decibel meters use something like Bluetooth to send the database to your phone / your computer). These will come in handy if you are logging sounds or want to share your data with others.
